Was a civilian state award established on 10-26-1956 for the development of virgin and uncultivated lands.
Was awarded to farmers, workers of state farms, construction and other organisations, the Party, government, labour and Komsomol workers for their good work in the development of virgin lands in Siberia, Kazakhstan, the Volga, the Ural and the North Caucasus for a period of usually at least two years. 
Was also awarded to Yuri Gagarin right after his space flight. It became a tradition to award the Medal to many Soviet cosmonauts after that.

Brass circular medal. Diameter 32 mm. One-piece rounded buttonhole. The horizon line of the obverse extends beyond the outer edge of the inscription. Made from 1960 to 1980 it was awarded to veterans of WWII or after the end of the war to people who had not received it.

The 2nd type from 6/19/1943 until the collapse of the USSR in 1991. As of January 1947 it was made without number.
