PRISONER OF WAR MEDAL FOR ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
Instituted 1985, and awarded to members of the U.S. military who have been made prisoner or held captive by opposing forces after April 5, 1917. To be eligible, the individual must have demonstrated upstanding character while in captivity thus preventing presentation to collaborators.  Also granted posthumously to the next of kin of deceased Prisoners of War.

Was established by President Eisenhower, on April 22, 1953.
It is awarded to every member of the U.S. Armed Forces who has served on active duty, or as an active reservist during any one of four specified periods of armed conflict or national emergency from June 27, 1950 through December 31, 2022.

Established in 1985 and granted to members of the Armed Forces of the reserve components. It is awarded to both officers and enlisted personnel.
In the Army Reserve and National Guard, a service member qualifies for the medal after completing a total of 10 years' service in the active reserve.
